My Theory

Postby fulltilt on Fri Jul 02, 2010 9:32 pm

Guys,

I am looking for some feedback here, I have a theory on what the Galant VR-4 will be worth in time to come. Of course, only time will tell if the theory is correct but... let me know what you think.

Here is something to think about in the comparison stakes....

They built and sold around 300 Ford Phase 3 GT Shakers from in 1971.

The best car Ford made at the time. A four door kick arse car. It took on the Holden Monaro, and the Torana XU1

400 Meters in 14.6 seconds

Buy price in 1971 $5500.00

20 years later ?

40 years later $600 000.00

We have a car that they imported just over 300.

Arguably the best Mitsubishi car made at the time. A four door kick arse car. It took on the Subaru Liberty RS

400 meters in 15 seconds (Standard of course... and with half the cylinders)

Buy Price $45 000.00

20 Years Later: $10 - $12K if you have a nice one

40 Years Later?

Now I am not saying we are sitting on potential GT Shaker Phase 3's.... But $600 000 in 40 years 300 built

There are a lot of similarities. I just dont get why these cars are being sold right now so cheaply. It has to be to do with the fact they are not really well known.... Or how about this theory..... Imports have killed the price.

One of the only major differences is the Galant VR-4 bought in imports.

That said... what would a Galant VR-4 be worth if the low volume imports / 15 year rule didnt happen. Surley these would be regarded as collectors items by now.

What do you think?

I agree aspec vr-4s are a big unknown many people dont know what they are im sick of people calling my car magna or less insultig a lancer on the other hand you show someone who knows very little about cars a picture of a GTHO Phase 3 Falcon and they know exactly what it is they know its not a monaro or a charger or a torana its a big ol chook tin. i think in years to come pristine VR-4 will be sort after by collectors and will be paid a pretty penny for i mean look what it lead to the lancer evo series is a car that is almost as well known as the GT falcon....

So what do we do about this, if anything? Look at the guy in your state that just picked up a fairly good condition VR-4 for $1250.00... that is appauling. (I realise it's a bargain for him, but this does bring the average price down on redbook and so on.)

Is there any way that anyone knows that can lift the status of our vehicles or are we happy leaving this car in the "wolf in sheeps clothing" category.

Pro's
People dont know what the car is capable of
It's a great "sleeper"
They dont get stolen as much over say a WRX with the higher profile

Con's
People dont know what the car is capable of
It's grossly underated
Resale is shit to say the least
any idiot can buy them now (Most of the present company excluded :-)

I am sure there are plenty more. However... do we want top raise the profile, and if so, what would we do?

If we dont want to raise the profile, what do you like about leaving the car in the hands of anyone. I remember when I first bought my car 12 years ago. It was at the time out of the price range of most.

When Tonydav bought his it was out of the price range of just about everyone. :-) (Sorry Tony... cheap shot I know)

I would be interested to get your feed back, no matter how long you have had your car for, or what you paid for your baby.

The sooner they are worth $20, the sooner I can rally one.

I don't see them going up in value as a classic here, they aren't nostalgic to Australians. Its still a Japanese turbo car, i cant see them ever being worth a fortune unless its a rare edition. Early evo's however i can see going up in a few years. Even now a neat evo 3 goes for as much or more than a run of the mill evo 6.

And the reason the resale is so low is there no demand as p-platers dont want them'as they dont know what they are!!!!! Instead in the ~10k range they would rather a 180sx or skyline as they are well know. After shopping around for about a year and a half i considered paying 10.5k fro mine a total bargain after looking at the condition of the 180's ect in the same price range. Plus i loved the awd and potential for modification, which i am tapping into a tad

 Rob, Rob, Rob,... at $1250.00... this might as well be $20.00 mate. Actually at $1250.00 they are paying you to take it. You cant by the snail for that much... just the turbo costs more than that... they should have advertsied it like :

"For sale. One complete Turbo. Low K's... by "Complete" we mean "Complete..... with car"

or

"For sale. One Turbo.... Will deliver to your driveway in a burgundy shell."

There are more... but I just cant keep ru7nning the car down....

There is a few flawa in your logic.

300-350 VR4's australian + the jap imported ones that got in

BUT 300 of the GT's were made world wide and prob 2/3'rd of them are written off or beyond repair. So the people who do have clean ones are the ones laughing and probably laugh even more everytime some fool writes another one off or is involved in a workshop fire etc.

Id be guessing to say they probably made +20,000 vr4's world wide.

A Mitsubishi is never going to become a classic or appreciate in value because of run of scales. Think about the Mclaren they appreciate every year. Then they go out an make a McLaren LM with a production run 1/10th of the original car.

Personally If you want to make money on any car this is the one you need to buy .

I do feel for the guys paying workshops upwards of +15k for engine/car work that is going into a black hole. Only way remote you are going to make anything on it or even is to do they work yourself and write off your own labour. It makes me sick how much i have spent on my car but id be lucky to get back 10k and even then im still spending money on it!
